What are Geothermal Heat Pumps?

Geothermal heat pumps are an alternative energy source for providing heat in the winter and cool air in the summer. They use energy that is stored in the ground.

A good geothermal heat pump will help reduce your home energy costs by up to seventy percent in some cases. Although, they are quite costly to setup and install, but most can be paid off in seven years.

Depending on your location, installation can run anywhere from fifteen to twenty-five thousand dollars, this includes the pump, the underground loop and the controls.

Since these devices can heat your home in the winter and cool it in the summer, there is no need to have separate appliances in the home to provide heating or cooling.

Another factor that may be determined by where you live is government incentives provided to people who have these systems installed.

The basic workings of geothermal heat pumps are that they pump heat to or from the ground. So, in the winter, it will use the ground as a heat source and during the summer it is used as a heat sink. This works because of the even temperatures in the ground.

A geothermal heat pump is also known as an earth energy heat pump, water-source heat pump, geoexchange or ground source heat pump. These devices work quite similarly to air conditioners and refrigerators by forcing the transfer of heat.

Geothermal heat pumps are an energy efficient alternative energy source that are becoming quite popular as more and more homeowners switch to alternative methods to heat and cool their home.

Some systems though are designed to operate in mode particular mode only, meaning they will only heat or cool depending on the climate you are located in.
